Skip to main content Main menu About Us Committee Chairs Executive Board CUS Bylaws Committee History CUS/ACRL Links Membership Information Event Calendar Members Palooza- NJLA-CUS/ACRL-NJ Open Meeting Newsletters Legislative Updates Contact Us NJLA College and University Section The New Jersey Chapter of the Association of College & Research Libraries, also the College and University Section of the New Jersey Library Association, works to enhance the effectiveness of academic and research librarians. We provide opportunities for professional development, continuing education, and networking. There are a number of active committees covering a wide range of library interests allowing librarians to tailor their involvement to their own professional and personal interests. NJLA CUS and ACRL News Member Spotlight Getting to know: Linda Salvesen Electronic Resources/Serials Management Librarian Jennings Library at Caldwell University 1. How did you get involved in NJLA-CUS/ACRL-NJ? Since I moved to NJ (from PA), and eventually returned to academic libraries, I discovered through colleagues that VALE and NJLA were excellent organizations for both professional learning and networking. Meeting other academic librarians at local events sealed the deal. 2. When I’m not at the library, you can find me… hiking, yardening (what I call working on both my yard and gardening), or running with my giant puppy. I love being outside in my free time (New Jersey weather permitting, of course). 3. When you were young, what did you want to be when you ‘grew up’? I deeply loved many different authors as a child (<3 RL Stine), so I always thought I’d end up as a writer… It is really cool that, while it’s not my focus, I still get to promote other authors in my work, as well as create some interesting content of my own. 4. What is your favorite part of your position? It’s hard to decide, since it changes with the academic year… But I’d say my favorite part of my position is posting on social media. I really get to use that creative part of my brain, and it never really feels like “work”. 5. What are you currently reading? Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence by Max Tegmark and Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow by Yuval Noah Harari (along with about a dozen other titles!) Member Spotlight Getting to know: James Cox, Librarian, Hudson County Community College 1. How did you get involved in NJLA-CUS/ACRL-NJ/VALE? My boss at my first library job was very supportive of ACRL-NJ and VALE and professional organizations generally. 2. What is a piece of advice that has helped you as a new librarian, and/or what advice you would give a new librarian? I’d suggest they get as much non-library experience (maybe real world?) as possible and to read widely. 3. When you were young, what did you want to be when you ‘grew up’? My first career ambition was to be a paleontologist. Later, I became an archaeologist. I still managed to eke out a few archaeological reports a year. 4. What are you currently most excited about in your position? (Programs, new resources, committees, etc.?) I’m trying to make deeper connections with students through our Makerspace and other outreach programs. Working with students is my fave thing. 5. What are you currently reading (or listening to on your mobile device(s)? Moderan by David R. Bunch will be my answer, but truly I’m reading about 10 different books simultaneously. BCMC 2019 Spring Meeting Member Spotlight Getting to know: Melissa Lena, VALE Program Manager How did you get involved in NJLA-CUS/ACRL-NJ/VALE? My first position as a newly minted librarian was Office Manager of NJLA. In Spring 2018 I became the Program Manager for VALE. When I’m not at the VALE office, you can find me….. Walking my dog in the local park, listening to audiobooks or podcasts on headphones. What is a piece of advice that has helped you as a new librarian, and/or what advice you would give a new librarian? It's okay to not know everything! It can be frustrating starting a new position and not immediately knowing the ins and outs of your environment and role. But with your MLS, you have a Master's degree in figuring it out. What are you currently most excited about in your position? (Programs, new resources, committees, etc.?) Or what is your favorite part of your position? Over the past few years, the OER (open educational resources) movement has been gaining traction throughout higher education. I'm excited to partner with other nonprofits like the Open Textbook Network to bring more open resources to our member libraries. What are you currently reading (or listening to on your mobile device(s)? All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks, and The Book of Dust Vol 1: La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman. Member Spotlight Getting to know: Bart Howard Everts Reference Librarian, Liaison to Rowan University and Camden County College in Camden Paul Robeson Library Rutgers University-Camden 1. How did you get involved in NJLA-CUS/ACRL-NJ? A colleague told me about the organization when I first started at Rutgers-Camden, and suggested I run for a position on the board, which I did and I’ve been participating ever since. 2. My first job ever was… Paper route. 3. What is a piece of advice that has helped you as a new librarian, and/or advice you would give a new librarian? Find a niche that interests you and pursue research in that area, participate in campus committees and activities outside of your department. 4. When you were young, what did you want to be when you ‘grew up’? A lawyer or a trash collector. 5. What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus? My position is unique in that I work with students from three different institutions; Rutgers-Camden as well as the Camden campuses of Rowan University and Camden County College, all of whom use the Robeson library as their primary academic library. I make sure that all three affiliated students and faculty know they are welcome in our library, and can easily access our resources, I do so formally through meetings, teaching classes and the like and informally through conversations. 6. What are you reading (or listening to on your mobile device(s)? What Does this Button Do? Bruce Dickinson and Feel Free , Zadie Smith. Member Spotlight Getting to know: Carina Gonzalez Outreach Librarian Evelyn S. Field Library Raritan Valley Community College 1. How did you get involved in NJLA-CUS/ACRL-NJ? I first found NJLA-CUS and ACRL-NJ when I was researching about academic librarianship. I was applying to a dream job and wanted as much information as possible to make my resume and application stand out. In short, I got the job. ;) 2. When I’m not at the library, you can find me….. playing minecraft! I’ve always been a gamer and librarianship has solidified that love. I have my own realm and my whole family plays. Let me know if you’d like to give it a try. 3. What is a piece of advice that has helped you as a new librarian (or new to academic librarianship), and/or advice that you would give a new librarian? My advice to new librarians would be to really pay attention to the culture of your library. Each one has different policies, procedures, and unwritten rules. Don’t make assumptions based on the last place you worked. 4. What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is the moment when you’ve realized you’ve helped somebody. It is the ultimate high. Whether during instruction, at an event, or stationed at reference, a smile and a thank you completely validate my day and my career. 5. When you were young, what did you want to be when you ‘grew up’? When I was young I wanted to be a marine biologist. The reason for this is because I wanted to be a veterinarian but I’m allergic to fur and so I thought marine biologists were dolphin veterinarians. I also wanted to be an opera singer, a science fiction publisher, and a computer animator. As an academic librarian and STEM liaison ...
